ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS |
Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids
Children are the future stewards of our environment. The earlier they
learn about appropriate outdoor use, the more likely they are to incorporate
it in their later lifestyle.
The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor
Ethics, has introduced Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids program:
the PEAK Day Pack. PEAK was developed to teach kids about responsible
behavior and stewardship when they spend time outside. Based on Leave No
Trace’s Seven Principles, PEAK incorporates elements of experiential and
environmental education into activities designed for kids, ages 6-12.
The Day Pack is ideal for parents, teachers, camp directors, youth group
leaders, or any instructor who leads or teaches outdoor recreation skills or
activities to children.

Active Community Environments
To promote physical activity locally, the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention developed a Program called Active Community Environments
Initiative (ACEs). These ACEs are settings where people of all ages and
abilities can easily enjoy walking, hiking, bicycling, and other forms of
recreation within their own community.
These settings: - Promote
physical activity through trails and partnerships - Develop sidewalks,
on-street bicycle facilities, multi-use paths and trails, parks, open space,
and recreational facilities. - Support mixed-use development and a
connected grid of streets, allowing homes, work, schools, and stores to be
close together and accessible by walking and bicycling.
ACEs also
help to improve health, preserve natural resources and decrease air
pollution.

National Park Service Volunteers
Our National Parks are cherished places that unfortunately are strained by
lack of funding, resources and staff. Volunteers provide an invaluable
service and help ensure that the Parks will continue to be enjoyed by future
generations.
In FY2003, 122,000 volunteers in the Volunteers-In-Parks
Program (VIP) donated 4.5 million hours to the Parks at a value of
approximately $77.3 million. VIPs perform a range of tasks from clearing
trails to providing visitor information to assisting archaeologists.
